NY loves hybrids; Capital Region drivers love them twice as much
The Business Review (Albany) - by
Pam Allen

Mike Orcutt, general manager of Nemith Nissan, says 50 of the 300 Altimas sold in the last three months were hybrids.
New York's gas prices rank among the country's highest, and so does its growing affinity for hybrids.
In 2007, sales of alternative vehicles across the state increased 50 percent over 2006, ranking it third-highest in overall hybrid sales behind California and Florida.
The eco-friendly cars fared even better in the Capital Region, where the number of registrations in 2007 doubled compared with the previous year.
And as fuel prices continue to rise, the inclination toward smaller, more eco-friendly cars hasn't slowed. In the last three months, 50 of the 300 Altimas sold at
Nemith Nissan in Latham were hybrid versions of the popular automobile.
"Around here, it's really a combination of gas mileage and ecology," said Mike Orcutt, Nemith Nissan's general manager.
State Department of Motor Vehicles registrations for hybrids in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties reached 2,756 in 2007, twice the 1,356 hybrids registered in 2006, DMV spokesman Nick Cantiello said.
A driving force behind the alternative vehicles is sticker shock at the pumps, experts say.
"The push is economy-related. It's fueled by gas prices," said Tom Libby, senior automotive analyst at Power Information Network, a unit of J.D. Power & Associates Inc. in Troy, Mich.
Nationwide, Toyota Prius captured 51 percent of last year's hybrid market, up from 43 percent the previous year, according to the survey released by R.L. Polk & Co., an automotive research company based in Southfield, Mich.
Hybrids cost more than their standard predecessors, but the tax credits add incentives, Orcutt said.
A standard Altima costs $22,000, while the hybrid runs $25,000. The $2,200 tax credit on the hybrid version can sweeten the deal, Orcutt said.
Price really comes into play with the luxury vehicles. For example, a traditional Lexus runs about $60,000, compared with $110,000 for the hybrid model.
In spite of their higher initial investments, hybrids are faring well in the larger auto market, which declined by 7 percent last year, Libby said.
Hybrids made up 2.9 percent of the country's new car sales in 2007, up slightly from 2006's 2.5 percent. U.S. registrations for new hybrids rose 38 percent last year to 350,289 vehicles. The percentage is higher in New York, where the 17,385 new hybrids represent a 50 percent increase over the 11,634 in 2006.
Statewide, hybrid sales represented 5 percent of the state's combined new car sales, the study by R.L. Polk also reported.
"When something that's good for the environment meets up with $4 a gallon, the environment becomes very ripe," said Deborah Dorman, president of the Eastern New York Coalition of Automobile Retailers Inc., a 94-member trade group of new car dealers.
Manufacturers lose money on hybrid production, which is the reason consumers pay so much for the vehicles, said Libby of Power Information Network. The automotive industry is bracing itself for new federal regulations that require each of their fleets to average 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
Demand for hybrids will remain limited until prices come down, Libby said, and prices likely won't come down until the industry develops cheaper technologies

IRS sales tax on car deduction
April 20, 2009
- TT-2009-3
Seven Facts about the New Sales Tax Deduction for Vehicle PurchasesTaxpayers who buy a new car or several other types of motor vehicles this year may be entitled to a special tax deduction when they file their 2009 federal tax returns next year. The tax break is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Here are seven things you should know about this new deduction:
State and local sales taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of qualifying vehicles are deductible.
Qualified motor vehicles generally include new (not used) cars, light trucks, motor homes and motorcycles.
Purchases must occur after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010.
This deduction can be taken regardless of whether or not you itemize other deductions on your tax return.
Taxpayers will claim this deduction when filing their 2009 federal income tax return next year.
The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.
The deduction may not be taken on 2008 tax returns.
Consumers who are considering buying a new car may find that this tax incentive means there may have never been a better time to buy.

Hear What Our Customers Have to Say

"Nemith best Nissan and service in the Albany , Schenectady , Saratoga and Troy area "

As a member of the Lia family and after shopping Armory Nissan in Albany , Lia Nissan in Schenectady and Saratoga Nissan, I found Nemith Nissan in Latham to not only have the lowest price and lease payment but Nemith Nissan also gave me more for my trade in and the best quality of service.

April Lia, Albany

"Dear Sales Manager "

I want to let you know how pleased my wife and I were with our salesman in our recent purchase of a 2008 Xterra. I can't tell you how many dealerships we have walked out of after being confronted with high-pressure and/or disingenuous salesmen. He was very professional, courteous and accommodating (we had to put 2 car seats in the Xterra to take our kids along on the test drive). He followed up with us during the purchase process of the vehicle, always answering our calls or returning them quickly. Buying a new vehicle is always a stressful experience. He was exemplary in his demeanor, and made it more pleasant than I would have expected. He came through as an honest, sincere salesperson, and respresented your company very well. Living in Schoharie, I wouldn't normally do business "way up" in Latham, but hen made it comforting enough that we didn't feel the need to walk out and come back down to the Nissan dealerships in Albany/Schenectady. I have already told several friends about the special prices you are currently running this month. I won't be shopping for a new vehicle for some time now, but when I do I will return. Please pass on our thanks.
